From imagination to reality

The evolution of technology in science and art.

Since humans began to think, we have searched for ways to make our ideas visible, audible and lasting. We carved signs into stone, beat drums and sang. What had existed only in our imagination took on a form that others could see, hear, feel and remember. Knowledge and art can only develop when we are able to pass them on.

Papyrus made thoughts portable. A stretched string over a resonating body opened new possibilities for musical expression. Printing allowed us to reproduce texts, mathematics and eventually music on a large scale. Photography preserved a moment; sound recordings preserved sounds and voices.

Then came the semiconductor. Few inventions have expanded our possibilities as fundamentally as the semiconductor. It forms the foundation of a digital world in which information, science and art can now do things that would have been almost unimaginable a hundred years ago. Our tools no longer merely preserve what we create – they help us calculate, simulate, combine and discover new possibilities.

And a new age is beginning. With increasing precision, we can translate what first exists only in our imagination into a form that can be perceived – especially in images and music. This allows us not only to express and share ideas, but to examine them, transform them, combine them and let something new emerge from them.

We observe. We explore. We think. We create. And what we create becomes the starting point for what can become possible next.
